On months that have a fifth Sunday, our adult forum will discuss a book together—and our first 5th Sunday of the program year is October 29! Join us in Park Hall after our 10:30 Eucharist as we discuss our first book --Rachel Held Evans’ Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church.

Rachel (1981-2019) was raised with deep roots in the evangelical faith: her father is a theology professor by trade, and her hometown, Dayton, Tennessee, was the location of the infamous Scope “Monkey Trial” in 1925, when a young science teacher was tried for the crime of teaching evolution in the public schools. Yet by her mid-twenties, she began to have difficulty with some of the teachings to which she was expected to ascribe. She and her husband and some friends tried planting their own church, but that didn’t work out. At around age 30, she found her way to the Episcopal Church—and this book was written, then published in 2015.

Tragically, Rachel passed away at age 38 from complications from influenza, leaving behind an unfinished manuscript, he husband Dan, and two small children, aged three and eleven months—and all of us who were so transformed by her perspective and her beautiful writing.

So many of us here at St. Martin’s have had a similar journey of leaving the denomination of our birth—or looking for a place to share our questions and doubts without fear of ridicule.
