Five St. Martin’s members traveled to Joplin, Missouri in July on a weekend mission trip with the Diocesan Youth Group. Steve Gillies shares his experiences helping to clean-up the area that was devastated by a tornado earlier this summer.

When Heidi Gioia made the request to the congregation for adult volunteers for the Diocesan Mission trip to Joplin, I don’t know why, but I knew I wanted to go. I told my wife Susan I wanted to help and she said she felt the same way.

St. Martin’s Episcopal Church was fortunate to have an exhibit of very special artwork on display in its Park Hall. This is a traveling exhibit created by children in our companion diocese, the Diocese of Lui. The children participating in this project range in ages from 4 to 19.

Children in the United States have crayons, colored pencils and various art supplies available from the time they are toddlers. The children of Lui had never held supplies like this in their hands. For these children, this was a first chance to express themselves through art. Please take a look at their work to gain a perspective of their world. Continue reading »

Walkers raise money to build wells in the Sudan

Bright blue skies and a chilly breeze greeted dozens of church and community members for St. Martin’s third annual Walk for Water Saturday, May 8.

The group left the church at 8:30 a.m., eager to do their part to raise money to build wells in our companion Diocese of Lui, Sudan.  Walkers, runners, bicyclists and scooters chose a 1-mile, 3-mile or 5-mile course surrounding the church grounds.  It was a glorious day — as you can see from the attached pictures.

So far, we have raised approximately $6,500 that will go directly to Lui.  You can still help that number grow by making a donation through this website or dropping off a check at church.

Thanks to Beth Buehler and the MDG committee for organizing such a great event. And thanks to everyone who continues to participate in this fun and important cause!
